Come Unione Popolare siamo assolutamente colpiti e in profondo dissenso con il modo con cui la presidente della Commissione Europea Ursula von der Leyen sta affrontando la gravissima crisi tra Israele e Palestina.
Dinnanzi all’inadeguatezza dimostrata dalla presidente von der Leyen, ci sentiamo in dovere di prendere parola. Tanto più dopo aver letto la giusta lettera di ben 800 funzionari della Commissione europea che avanzano critiche che condividiamo. E che sono evidenti anche dalle “differenziazioni” assunte dal presidente del Consiglio europeo e dall’alta autorità alla politica estera.
La presidente von der Leyen si è mossa formalmente e sostanzialmente fuori dal suo ruolo. Ha assunto iniziative e preso posizioni che non le spettavano e in contrasto con la stessa politica consolidata dell’Unione europea. I suoi pronunciamenti sono stati del tutto squilibrati in direzione di una parte e privi addirittura della sensibilità umana verso le vittime palestinesi. Addirittura, in questo, von der Leyen si è distinta negativamente dallo stesso presidente Biden.
Noi, che siamo profondamente critici con la politica UE che non fa quello che dovrebbe per portare la pace e riconoscere i diritti del popolo palestinese e l’attuazione delle risoluzioni dell’Onu, pensiamo che la presidente von der Leyen sia andata ben oltre e che questo costituisca un atto intollerabile per le stesse istituzioni europee oltre che naturalmente per i cittadini. Per questo ne chiediamo le dimissioni.

As Unione Popolare, we are absolutely shocked by and deeply disagree with the way in which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is dealing with the very serious crisis between Israel and Palestine.
In the face of the inadequacy demonstrated by President von der Leyen, we feel compelled to speak out. All the more so after reading the righteous letter from no less than 800 officials of the European Commission who make criticisms that we share. And which are also evident from the ‘differentiations’ made by the President of the European Council and the High Authority for Foreign Policy.
President von der Leyen acted formally and substantially outside her role. She took initiatives and positions that were not hers to take and contrary to established EU policy itself. Her pronouncements have been completely unbalanced in the direction of one side and lacking even human sensitivity towards the Palestinian victims. Even, in this, von der Leyen distinguished herself negatively from President Biden himself.
We, who are deeply critical of EU policy that does not do what it should to bring peace and recognise the rights of the Palestinian people and the implementation of UN resolutions, think that President von der Leyen has gone much further and that this constitutes an intolerable act for the European institutions themselves as well as, of course, for the citizens. That is why we call for her resignation.
